Tips for Debuting Your New Braces at Work
August 22, 2024
Wearing braces as an adult can be a little nerve-wracking, especially the first time you debut them at work. But while it’s normal to feel a little self-conscious at first, it will get easier. Still, adjusting to new equipment and caring for your teeth away from home will require a little practice, but armed with the right tools, keeping your treatment on track away from home will be a breeze!
Pack a Care Kit
If you’re planning on eating even a snack away from home, do yourself a favor and pack a braces care kit to take with you. Your kit should include:
- A toothbrush
- Dental floss
- Floss threaders
- Braces brushes
- Toothpaste
- Pain reliever
- Dental wax
- A small mirror
Furthermore, make sure you have access to water or bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated and to help rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth.
Watch What You Eat
There are certain foods that are harder to eat with braces than others. For example, corn on the cob is nearly impossible, but bananas are not. Broccoli and beets are great for you, but they can be obvious if they get stuck in your wires and brackets. Just be sure that whatever you decide to eat is easily removable and on your approved list of foods from your dentist.
Don’t Use Your Teeth Off-Brand
Your teeth are meant to chew food, not open packages, bite your nails, chew your pen cap, or tear off those frustrating paper seals on the tops of containers. But while using them to do this is dangerous enough without braces, add in orthodontics and you’re not only in danger of chipping a tooth, but you could also damage your braces. Thus, use your hands (or an appropriate tool) to open packaging, and don’t chew on anything that isn’t approved by your dentist!
Don’t Hide Your Smile
Yes, smiling can be a little awkward when you first get braces, but don’t be afraid to show your emotions during treatment. Chances are your coworkers and clients have seen braces before, and they’ll get used to your (temporary) new look. Besides, it’ll all be worth it when you have a gorgeous new grin to show off!
Remember, it’s normal to feel a little uncomfortable debuting braces in the workplace, but it will get easier once you get adjusted. Just be patient with yourself and make proper preparations for success, and you’ll get the hang of it in no time!
