Scared? Here’s Why The Dentist is Nothing to Be Afraid Of
July 20, 2024
For a variety of reasons, all kinds of people are are made anxious by the prospect of visiting the dentist. Helping nervous patients feel comfortable is a skill that every oral health professional has to learn, and conquering that fear is important for any patient who wants to have a healthy smile.
However, the the truth is that dentists are nothing to be scared of. If you find that a little hard to believe, here are a few reasons why that’s the case.
Modern Anesthetics Are Incredibly Powerful
One of the biggest things that makes people nervous about visiting the dentist is the prospect of discomfort. This is especially true when it comes to procedures like root canals or tooth extractions, both of which have a reputation for being painful.
However, neither of them are. This is because any dentist or endodontist will use anesthetics to numb your mouth completely before beginning any procedure that has any risk discomfort associated with it, ensuring that you won’t feel them at all!
Dentists Have Seen Everything
Some people, particularly those who haven’t been to the dentist’s in a while, feel like they can’t go for fear of being judged. The fact of the matter is that any dentist with a decent amount of experience has seen everything, and isn’t going to judge you for the state of your oral health. This is especially true for specialists who tend to deal with the most extreme dental problems.
Your dentist isn’t interested in judging you, and frankly, isn’t phased by what they see in your mouth. Their many priority is to do their job as well as they possibly can.
Sedation is an Asset
Some people aren’t inherently nervous at the dentist’s office, but have strong gag reflexes or can’t really sit still through their whole appointment. This can potentially make people who wouldn’t ordinarily be afraid a little bit anxious.
In these cases, sedation can be incredibly useful. Dentists have a variety of sedation options available to you, allowing you to relax during your procedure and suppressing any physiological reactions that may make care hard for you.
And if you really have trouble conquering your dental anxiety, sedation can help you in that regard too. It’s an option worth exploring with your dentist if you can’t ordinarily make it to your office.
